Saint Mother Teresa was the first location opened for Footsteps to Success. In 2016, we had approximately 150 youth registered. The majority of the youth registered are returnees from previous years and some have attended for several years. At our site, campers experience a full day of either Arts, Sports, or Leadership. We also go on weekly off-site trips that include swimming, ROM, Science Centre, and so on. The Saint Mother Teresa site is partnered with the Malvern Family Resource Centre, which helps offer and facilitate different activities for the campers, such as BMX, cooking classes, and more!
Sports program
The sports program often splits the gym in half to have two activities running at the same time. Alternatively, we do larger group activities outside if the weather permits. The sports program focuses on teamwork, good sportsmanship, and teaching the fundamentals of daily physical exercise. We also have partner organizations who come in to run different activities.
In 2014, we worked in coordination with Rookie Ball and cricket instructors to allow the campers to learn a range of different and new sports. In 2015 and 2016, TIRF Rugby (Toronto Inner-City Rugby Foundation), held multiple workshops for campers to learn different rugby skills.
Arts & Dance program
The arts program focuses on getting the campers to have a mix of different art elements throughout their camp experience. Campers can participate in group dances and/or solo performances if they are interested. They can explore other types of talents as well, such as raps, beat boxing, or skits. Focusing on the visual aspect of arts, activities range from tie dye, painting, paint wars, 3D drawings, free draw, gimp, etc. Arts campers also have the opportunity to engage in more active games, such as different water games, basketball, capture the flag, and so on.
Leadership program
The Malvern Family Resource Centre provides our leadership campers with different activities and programming. The leadership program is offered to girls only. This creates a safe area for girls to openly express themselves, and ask questions they are not comfortable saying around the other gender. MFRC works in conjunction with other partners, and helps bring in guests to run activities. Some examples are the kiddie carnival for Caribana, soccer, BMX, etc.
