Father Henry Carr is the second location for Footsteps to Success. Our camp is a rotational camp that offers Arts, Sports, and Leadership. Campers are placed in their morning group and rotate in the afternoon, allowing every camper to experience all three of the programs we offer. We are partnered with two organizations who provide programming for Sports (Motionball Sports) and Leadership (MicroSkills).
We offer weekly off-site trips. Some past examples are: the Science Centre, ROM, Wild Water Kingdom, Wonderland, etc. Trips vary every year. Our camp also takes the campers swimming at Humber College Pool once a week.
Sports program
Majority of our campers who register sign up for our sports camp. We offer different sports activities, such as basketball, soccer, dodgeball, rugby, and so on. We are partnered with Motionball Sports, who provide programming activities. Their staff give our campers the opportunity to learn different games and activities. Sports campers play more sport-oriented activities, while Arts and Leadership campers engage in fun physical activities that are less sport-oriented. Over the years, we have had different coaches come and provide workshops to our campers. This includes cricket, rugby, and so on.
We have had different workshops offered throughout the years, such as cricket and rugby. In 2016, we worked in tandem with the Healthy Kids Community Challenge, who offer fun and free activities for our campers, while sometimes providing the camp with small free gifts!
Arts program
The arts program incorporates different areas of arts such as: Arts and Craft, Dance, Drama, and Music. Our counsellors ensure that arts campers explore their different levels of creativity, ranging from visual to physical arts. Sports and Leadership campers have different activities that are geared towards their interest. For example, Sports campers can participate in the more active forms of art rather than visual arts.
Dance and Music are newer components to our camp, as instructors will come in to run workshops for smaller groups. Dance instructors have come in to teach a range of dance, such as Dancehall, African, and Hip Hop. In 2015, the Beat Academy ran workshops for small groups to learn how to create their own Hip Hop beats.
Leadership program
Leadership is where they children learn how to communicate and to build their leadership and problem solving skills. This section of the camp is led by our partners from MicroSkills. Campers learn about teamwork, positive self-image, public speaking, and so on. Sports and Arts campers learn these skills through different forms of activities as well. For example, sports campers will play sports while learning about teamwork. Leadership provides campers and counsellors with the opportunities to learn more about themselves and other people. It is an essential component to building people, building relationships, and building the community.
The Beat Academy
The Beat Academy is an organization that helps teach youth how to use technology to create their own hip hop beats. They partnered with the Footsteps to Success camp and a DJ presented 4-5 different workshops for a small group of individuals. Campers used high-end technology for their beat-making skills, and even created background music for commercials that were shown at our talent show.
Anthony Bennett Skills Academy
The Anthony Bennett Skills Academy is an elite basketball camp that shares our Father Henry Carr facility each year. In coordination with Footsteps to Success, the campers have the opportunity to meet the different NBA players such as Anthony Bennett, Tyler Ennis and Andrew Wiggins. Campers and counsellors can participate in sports activities with NBA players, such as 3 on 3 basketball games, bump, Q&As, pictures, and sometimes free giveaways!
Healthy Kids Community Challenge Rexdale
Healthy Kids Community Challenge Rexdale is an organization whose aim is to create a healthy and empowered community. They reach out to the different organizations located in the Rexdale area and provide them with free, fun and physical activities. They try to help the community to live a better lifestyle by reinforcing the idea of keeping active everyday. They also showed our campers the different ways of living a healthy lifestyle and also told them the benefits of one.
Read 2 Rap
Read 2 Rap is an organization that encourages youth to have small, open discussions about current events and important topics, such as violence in the Greater Toronto Area and safety. The program teaches youth to become excited about reading articles, then forms a small debate or discussion. They partnered with all three Footsteps to Success camp locations as a way of promoting literacy, as well as STEM while youth help set up and record their discussions. They formulated podcasts, which are able for the consumption of other individuals outside of the discussion.
R.I.S.E.
R.I.S.E. (Reaching Intelligent Souls Everywhere) is an organization that allows young people to find their voice through poetry, spoken word, and other forms of art. They partnered with the Footsteps camps to hold a small group workshop with our older campers who were in high school. The workshop consisted of discussions surrounding identity and self-reflection.
Microsoft S.T.E.M.
Microsoft partnered with Footsteps at Father Henry Carr to offer S.T.E.M. workshops. They brought in Surface Pro laptops and tablets to teach campers how to code within a Minecraft gaming system. The campers also learned how to control robotic heads and robotic hands within the workshops.
